摘要
This paper examines the impact of population migration on regional structural changes from the demand side. We develop a two-region, two-sector dynamic spatial general equilibrium model that incorporates life-cycle dynamics, endogenous migration, and technological progress. In our framework, migrants demand tradable goods from their hometowns, while non-tradable goods can only be supplied locally. This asymmetric migrant demand effect leads to industrial divergence between inflow and outflow regions. Our analytical model further demonstrates that age-related heterogeneity in consumption preferences weakens the impact of migration on structural transformation, whereas age-related income heterogeneity amplifies it. Calibrating the quantitative model to post-hukou re- form data from China, we find that migration accounts for over one-third of regional industrial divergence.
