David Krisztian Nagy

Lecture 1: Why does space matter? Increasing returns, transport costs and the geography of economic activity

Motivation: The high spatial concentration of economic activity

Increasing returns and transport costs lead to agglomeration

A simple quantitative spatial model: Chapter 3 in Redding (JIE, 2016)

Lecture 2: Quantitative illustration

Taking the Redding (2016) model to the data: data requirements, parameters

Matlab coding: Inversion and counterfactual simulation of the Redding (2016) model; exact hat algebra

Lecture 3: The importance of market access

Simple and structural measures of market access

Empirical evidence on the importance of market access: Redding and Sturm (AER, 2008)

Market access as a tool to evaluate transport infrastructure improvements: Donaldson and Hornbeck (QJE, 2016)

Matlab coding: Market access in the Redding (2016) model

Lecture 4: Dynamic spatial economics

Dynamic reallocation of labor after a spatial shock: Caliendo, Dvorkin and Parro (Econometrica, 2019)

Dynamic hat algebra

Matlab coding: Dynamic hat algebra, shooting algorithm
