摘要
Chinese manufacturing firms are observed to have an intriguing rise of domestic value-added content in exports (DVAR), despite their deepening engagement in global value chains (GVCs) since 2001. This paper empirically examines whether the rise of DVAR in China is attributed to the change of labor market flexibility, using the staggered relaxation of Chinese Hukou policies across cities and time as a quasi-natural experiment. Using the combined firm-level data and transaction-level trade data from 2000 to 2013, this paper finds that the relaxation of labor market flexibility through Hukou reform has significantly increased the DVAR of Chinese firms. Firms exposed to Hukou reform tend to allow more employment adjustment, conduct more R&D innovations and produce more export varieties, all of which further improve the DVAR of Chinese firms. This effect is more prominent for non-SOE firms, non-processing firms, coastal firms, and firms at the upstream sectors of GVCs. We also find novel evidence that the positive effect of Hukou reform on the firm-level DVAR can be mitigated by input trade liberalization and trade uncertainty reduction while amplified by reductions in output tariffs.

林发勤，中国农业大学经济管理学院教授、博士生导师。担任国家农业市场研究中心研究员、国际经济研究所执行所长，SSCI期刊China Economic Review副主编、《长安大学学报》（社会科学版）编委、Asian Development Policy Review执行主编。林教授的研究方向为国际贸易学和发展经济学的应用研究，已在Journal of International Economics、Journal of Development Economics、European Economic Review、《经济研究》、《管理世界》国内外顶级期刊等发表了70多篇学术论文。同时，作为负责人主持国家自然科学基金项目（3项）、北京自然科学基金项目、农业部项目多项，多次获得“安子介”国际贸易研究奖。
