摘要
This paper explores the impact of culture on industrial similarity during its trade liberalization process. The results lend support to the New Economic Geography Theory and show that trade liberalization promotes competition among firms and thus accelerates the industrial integration for two neighboring counties. However, regional culture prevents the progress of assimilation. In particular, the growth rate of industrial assimilation for two neighboring counties that share the same dialect is slower than those with distinct dialects. Our study contributes to the literature by identifying culture, which may serve as another form of protectionism, in determining the benefits across regions from trade liberalization within a country.

焦阳，现任 Young Harris College 助理教授。研究领域包括劳动经济学、发展经济学和中国经济学。在 Small Business Economics, Public Choice, China Economic Review, Journal of Labor Research, Applied Economics 等期刊发表论文多篇。目前的研究兴趣在文化以及制度和劳动力市场的关系，文化对个体决策的决定，以及移民对技术创新和区域发展的影响。
